Hi Pete;
I did upgrade from my old 35 amp generator to a 70 amp alternator using a kit from Plane Power.
I thought the kit was well made, the installation was pretty easy and the thing has worked fine since I installed it.
The Plane Power kit for your engine is ER 14-50. Go to the Plane Power website (www.plane-power.com) and take a look at the important note related to the installation of this unit.
I found a price of $676 at www.aircraftspruce.com.
Happy Flying

Hi Pete,
Welcome to the forums. I'll see if Steve Ells has any specific info for you, but you might also check out this article about a generator to alternator conversion;

I'm looking for some guidance on this. I have a late 1950's model 172 with a generator. I'm told that in the early 60's Cessna started installing alternators. My question is, is there anyone out there who knows of any way that I can ( providing I can get my hands on all the parts ) legally, convert mine to the Cessna alternator system? Any help would really be appropriated. Regards, Pete.
