Hi JW;
I talked to my camping and motor home equipment expert and he told me that he has tried selling all kinds of small generators at his store and none of the others have stood up as well as the small Honda generators.
I think you will find a good deal at AirVenture (Oshkosh). Honda has had a display there for years.

You might try posting your question on the "airplane camping" page on Facebook.

Hi,

I am going to start taking Bill camping. There are a few fly-in campgrounds available near me (STL), and we plan on bringing the tents and all we need to settle in for some fishing, or hiking, or whatever. So, I'm thinking I want to get a small high-quality, lightweight portable generator. Probably just to run a string of lights at night, maybe charge some electronics (SPOT tracker, cell phone, GPS...no iPads!).

Does anyone have EXPERIENCE (not "I read that...") with recently-available models and any advice on what to get or not?

I'm sure there will be some units displayed at Oshkosh, but I want to get one before then.

John
