You're a lucky man--the 1966 182 J is a good airplane. I used to own one.
There is a part called the "position bracket). It's shown in figure 75 of the parts manual for your airplane. The part number is 0712714-2.
The bracket has a series of holes in its length; the lever has a peg sticking out of the inboard side. The cowl flaps are held in the selected position when the peg on the handle is held into one of the holes on the bracket.
When cowl flaps won't stay in position it's because the holes in the bracket are worn; because the peg is worn or both. Sometimes the cowl flap handle gets bent so the peg is no longer held against the bracket.
Take off the center console trim; you'll see what I'm talking about.

Hey I am new to this site but I have a 1966 182 and I am having a problem with the cowl flaps popping open during flight. On the ground the work perfectly but in flight the will not stay closed. This problem has just started happening in the last flew flights .any ideas
