Thanks for your help Steve! I found some corrosion on the ground strap at the point of contact with the airframe below the battery box.
Works great now.

Nope, too big a drop.

Things to check.

1) good ground at the battery--clean it to make sure.

2) a bonding strap between the engine and the engine mount--to provide a clean return path from the starter to the negative side of the battery. Paint must be removed at each contact point.

Often this strap does not get re-installed following an engine upgrade of engine change.

3) Corrosion between large lugs on battery, ground and other large current carrying cables.

You can jump around some of these potential problems by using a set of good auto jumper cables to provide a clean path and comparing the "installed" results vs. the "jumped" results.

Usually since, these power cables are so large, a simple continuity check will not reveal a problem. The cable's ability to carry a load must be tested.

Let me know what you find.

Best,
Steve

I have a 182J model. The voltage at the battery is 12.5 volts. When I engage the starter the voltage at the starter is 8 volts. Is this considered an acceptable drop? I have the P Ponk conversion with the high compression pistons.
