September 2005- The big trend in General Aviation today is clearly the glass cockpit. Every new production aircraft being produced offers some sort of visual nirvana where bright colored pictures replace whirring gyros, needles and blinking lights.
I myself have spent just about equal time in both worlds. The first half of my flying career was totally devoted to the use of mechanical instruments. They were solid things and were fairly reliable, but they had their drawbacks. The second half of my flying life so far has been spent staring at and programming glass cockpit aircraft.
